One of our favourite films this year was Birdman directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu , Cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki and edited by Douglas Crise and Stephen Mirrione. As I watched the film, I wondered how they did it? How did they make it look like one long take. This video helps shed some light on the techniques used in filming. As you see, it was all shot with one camera, and no real lighting to speak of. They used reflectors, 'built in' lighting of the city and then added some interesting lighting, such as a string of Christmas tree lights in the liquor store scene, to augment the store's own lighting. These are techniques that can be used when shooting a Music Video or short film. It's what helps keep the costs down. The editing of this film was a little more complicated. They used a lot of CGI and special effects to capture some of the looks. Here is a cool video that explains some of the techniques used. It is an interview with Digital colorist Steve Scott.
